Project Details
One solution for preventing new invasive species introductions from ballast discharges in the Great Lakes is to have all vessels equipped with effective, approved and regulated on-board ballast treatment systems per the International Maritime (IMO) and United States standards. This study used the emergency response system successfully designed with the support of the Great Lakes Fishery Trust as a springboard to a full blown permanent treatment system that used Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) for one of the largest Great Lakes Freighters (Lakers), the M/V Indiana Harbor. The study analyzed the possibility of engineering and installing the system, reviewed the costs of implementing the system to determine the economic feasibility and determined the minimum piping necessary to install during the 2009-10 winter lay-up to facilitate shipboard testing in 2010. The naval architects at The Glosten Associates concluded that the proposed sodium hydroxide ballast treatment system is a practical solution and recommended moving ahead with shipboard trials and development of a commercial version of the system.
