Project Details

A lack of standardized methods to detect Renibacterium salmoninarum (Rs), the microbe that causes salmonid bacterial kidney disease, has made comparison of data among Great Lakes agencies difficult and complicates interagency disease management decisions. This project completed field validation testing of five standardized nonculture Rs diagnostic assays. The use of standardized, validated assays should assist fish health professionals and fishery managers in developing more effective programs for monitoring and management of salmonid bacterial kidney disease in Great Lakes fish populations.
