Project Details

Project Summary:

In 2005, The Nature Conservancy in Michigan (TNC) began efforts to protect the North Point Peninsula, near Alpena on the shores of Lake Huron—one of the most ecologically significant regions in the Great Lakes basin. It produces and sustains important offshore fisheries, is home to many endangered and threatened species and provides critical migratory bird habitat. The protection of this unique property helps conserve important habitats for the diverse plants and wildlife that depend on it. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has designated North Point Peninsula and the surrounding areas as one of only 20 “Biodiversity Investment Areas” (BIAs) in the Great Lakes region. This designation is given in recognition of the outstanding examples of Great Lakes shoreline communities present in this region, the concentrations of species of special interest it harbors, and the exceptional levels of natural diversity and high levels of ecological connectivity it represents. The acquisition and ensuing conservation easement of this parcel, under the ownership of Huron Pines, not only eliminates development threats and ensures proper management of the near shore ecosystem and inland mixed hardwood conifer forests; it also significantly augments the promotion of recreational, historic and aesthetic activities in the area.
