2020 GLFT Access to the Great Lakes Fishery - Access to the Great Lakes Fishery

Project Details

This project responded to a well-documented community need for improved access to the Platte River, identified through stakeholder consultations and local surveys dating back to 2010. Community members, including anglers, residents, and environmental advocates, highlighted the lack of accessible shore-based fishing opportunities in the region, making it difficult for individuals with varying abilities to enjoy this vital recreational resource.

Situated in Homestead Township’s Platte River Park, the project encompasses a prime stretch of the Platte River, renowned for its diverse and robust fish populations, including coho salmon, steelhead, and brown trout. This location not only enhances recreational opportunities but also aligns with regional conservation efforts aimed at preserving the river’s unique ecological habitats.

The initiative complements existing programs by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and local conservation organizations, focusing on habitat protection, fisheries management, and public engagement. By establishing universally accessible fishing platforms and educational resources, the project aligns with wider efforts aimed at promoting sustainable fishing practices and fostering environmental stewardship.

The intended population served includes local residents, anglers, families, and individuals with disabilities, ensuring everyone can enjoy the recreational benefits of the river. This project aims to foster community engagement, economic development through tourism, inclusive outdoor recreation, and a deeper appreciation for the natural resources that the Platte River offers.
